The Sisterhood of Congregation Beth Sholom-Chevra Shas is where the women of the congregation can make new friends, socialize, learn about their Jewish heritage, share ideas, develop new interests and skills and have fun. We are dedicated to keeping alive the ideals of Conservative Judaism through a variety of educational, cultural, religious and social programs.

We are affiliated with the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism and strongly support the cornerstones of commitment and observance, consistent with the halakhah of the Conservative Movement: Shabbat and Yom Tov, Jewish study, kashrut, tzedakah, synagogue and Israel. Our membership includes women of all ages and interests. Z ‘Havah is a newly-formed group for women under the age of 45 in the congregation.

Each September we begin our new year with a potluck dinner.

We hold two rummage sales annually – an opportunity for congregants to get rid of clothing and the stuff of everyday lives and for people who need it to buy at reasonable prices.

We hold an annual Sisterhood Shabbat, where all parts of the Saturday morning service are conducted by women, including the Torah reading.

We make thousands of hamantaschen for Purim mishloach manot baskets that are given to every congregant and college student, as well as the clients of Jewish Family Service. The proceeds of this major fundraiser are divided among Sisterhood, USY and the congregation.

We hold an annual women’s enrichment seminar, where we come together to study with other women. We go to a yoga retreat together; and sponsor a summer theater trip.

We raise money to help support rabbinic and cantorial training at the Jewish Theological Seminary by asking women to donate money for Torah Fund pins and by holding an annual Torah Fund event.

Sisterhood caters a wide variety of functions throughout the year, including for s’machot (celebrations) and congregational functions. Help us make congregants’ life cycle events even better by contributing your time. We are known for our good food!

Sisterhood manages a Judaica Shop that offers many items for personal use and gift giving. It is open Sunday mornings when Religious School is in session or by appointment.

Most of all, Sisterhood is a major life force within the congregation. We donate time and money for scholarships for our youth to attend a Jewish summer camp or other Jewish trip, or unexpected expenses or items not covered in the synagogue budget.

Come join us. We are here for you. Sisterhood is where you will make your lifelong friends. The warmth, friendship, and sense of belonging that one gains from Sisterhood are experienced only through your active membership and participation. We urge you to come and share yourself and your talents with us.
